Monument to the Unknown Tailoress

This aided ready-made in anchored in a personal as well as in a larger history of representation or, more precisely, of non-representation.

The employed dress form used to belong to a flesh-and-blood tailoress. She is totally unknown, and thus distant to me, and yet so near: she was the mother of my life partner, who died before I could meet her. As it is gilded, it is no longer functional as a working tool to become homage to this woman and, more generally, to millions of anonymous “little hands” who are rarely honoured by monuments in our culture.
