These stylised silhouettes are superimposed onto more or less realistic landscapes; two modes of depiction coexist in each panel and this gives rise to images of a critical nature. Only one landscape – the savannah – is the actual habitat of the animal. |

The pretty postcard of the Bern Alps needs no comment, other than the fact that I see it every day. As for the birchwood, this very Polish, nearly mythic motif was immortalised, amongst others, in a short story and in a movie. Besides, as Flaubert said once about his character Madame Bovary, “The zebra is me.” What is this poor cousin of the horse doing in Switzerland?
