Ghosts in the Mountains

1999, 110 x 140 cm, oil on canvas, sold

Doublets, shadows, ghosts: Death is haunting μíμησις.

This painting represents a manipulated picture downloaded from the Internet. I like hiking and this refers amongst others to this pleasant hobby. But I have chosen an anonymous picture in order to avoid the reference to the “family album” or the “tourist” photograph.

The landscape with white figures is painted in the negative whereas the reflection in water preserves the colours of the original. This manipulation stresses the repetition existing in the original photo. In addition, it transforms the tourists into fleshless ghosts, less material than their reflections in the water.
